CISD Students Act in Mock Bus Cras |
Saturday, September 18th Crandall ISD students participated in a service project in conjunction with the Mesquite Fire Department. The fire department staged a mock school bus crash for training. Crandall students were outfitted with artificial wounds, synthetic blood, and an assortment of faux bruises to mimic possible real life injuries. Students assisted the fire department by acting as crash victims to execute the training. Crandall High School Student Council sponsors, Mr. Trammell and Mrs. Jouett, were on site and participated in the event alongside their students. CHS students were granted 4 hours of community service in exchange for their participation. Simulating a crash site and conducting mock exercises provides training and preparedness to emergency responders. Crews who work in real emergencies have an opportunity to practice their skills and establish habits they can use during a true crisis.

Buddy Reading at Wilson Elementary |
Nola Kathryn Wilson 5th grade and kindergarten students have been participating in a Buddy Reading program.
The buddy reading system is used as a mentoring program. Buddy Reading creates a big brother atmosphere, teaches fluency, decoding skills, and comprehension. The fifth grade students have settled into their leadership roles. Teachers use Capturing Kid's Hearts prinicples as a guideline to manage behavior and procedures during buddy reading time every week. The children feel a kinship with their buddy and write notes to thank them during journal time. Buddy reading is used to teach character traits as well as sharing books. The fifth grade students enjoy their role as mentors to the younger students and model their best behavior. "We hope to focus on what it means to be a good student as well as a leader," stated Mrs. Bullock, a Wilson Elementary teacher.
The kindergarten and 5th grade students have been partnering on a weekly basis since August. It is said to be their favorite time of the week! |
